Babe Ruth Biography

Born: February 6, 1895(1895-02-06), Baltimore, Maryland
Died: August 16, 1948(1948-08-16), New York, New York
Batted: Left Threw: Left

George Herman Ruth, Jr. February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948, best known as "Babe" Ruth and nicknamed "the Bambino" and "the Sultan of Swat", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914–1935. Ruth originally broke into the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox as a starting pitcher, but after he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919, he converted to a full-time right fielder and subsequently became one of the league's most prolific hitters. Ruth was a mainstay in the Yankees' lineup that won seven pennants and four World Series titles during his tenure with the team. After a short stint with the Boston Braves in 1935, Ruth retired. In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Ruth has since become regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture. He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the "Roaring Twenties". Off the field he was famous for his charity, but also was noted for his often reckless lifestyle. Ruth is credited with changing baseball itself. The popularity of the game exploded in the 1920s, largely due to his influence. Ruth ushered in the "live-ball era", as his big swing led to escalating home run totals that not only excited fans, but helped baseball evolve from a low-scoring, speed-dominated game to a high-scoring power game.

In 1998, The Sporting News ranked Ruth number one on the list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players". In 1999, baseball fans named Ruth to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. In 1969, he was named baseball's Greatest Player Ever in a ballot commemorating the 100th anniversary of professional baseball. In 1993, the Associated Press reported that Muhammad Ali was tied with Babe Ruth as the most recognized athletes, out of over 800 dead or alive athletes, in America. The study found that over 97% of Americans over 12 years of age identified both Ali and Ruth. According to ESPN, he was the first true American sports celebrity superstar whose fame transcended baseball. In a 1999 ESPN poll, he was ranked as the third-greatest US athlete of the century, behind Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali.

Ruth was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season (1927), setting the season record which stood until broken by Roger Maris in 1961. Ruth's lifetime total of 714 home runs at his retirement in 1935 was a record, until first surpassed by Hank Aaron in 1974. Unlike many power hitters, Ruth also hit for average: his .342 lifetime batting is tenth highest in baseball history, and in one season (1923) he hit .393, a Yankee record. His .690 career slugging percentage and 1.164 career on-base plus slugging (OPS) remain the Major League records. Ruth dominated the era in which he played. He led the league in home runs during a season twelve times, slugging percentage and OPS thirteen times each, runs scored eight times, and runs batted in (RBIs) six times. Each of those totals represents a modern record (as well as the all-time record, except for RBIs).

Personal life

Ruth married Helen Woodford in 1914.[49] Owing to his infidelities, they were reportedly separated around 1926. Helen died in a fire in Watertown, Massachusetts on January 11, 1929 in a house owned by Edward Kinder, a dentist whom she had been living with as "Mrs. Kinder". Kinder identified her body as being that of his wife, then went into hiding after Helen's true identity was revealed; Ruth himself had to get authorities to issue a new death certificate in her legal name, Margaret Helen Woodford Ruth.

Ruth had two daughters. Dorothy Ruth was adopted by Babe and Helen. Decades later, she wrote a book, My Dad, the Babe, claiming that she was Ruth's biological child by a girlfriend named Juanita Jennings.

Ruth adopted Julia Hodgson when he married her mother, actress and model Claire Merritt Hodgson. Julia currently resides in Arizona, and threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the final game in the original Yankee Stadium on September 21, 2008.

Ruth and Claire regularly wintered in Florida, frequently playing golf during the off-season and while the Yankees were spring training in Tampa, Florida. After retirement, he had a winter beachfront home in Treasure Island, Florida, near St. Petersburg.

Pollard made another half-century in the second match, but didn't manage to make double figures in either of last two games. He was named in the West Indies squad for the 2006 U/19 Cricket World Cup, held in Sri Lanka, where he only managed to make 19–runs in his four innings, though he did manage to take two wickets in a defeat to Australia.

Pollard's impressive performance in the 2009 Champions League Twenty20 and the Big Bash led to him being one of the most sought after players at the 2010 IPL auction. After some aggressive bidding, the Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore all bid the maximum allowed; $750,000. A 'silent-tiebreaker' was won by the Mumbai Indians, which retained him in 2011 IPL.

ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2010

Chris Gayle Biography

Born: 21 September 1979 (1979-09-21), Kingston, Jamaica
Height: 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m)
Batting style: Left-handed
Bowling style: Right arm off break
Role: Opening Batsman
National side: West Indies

Christopher Henry Gayle born 21 September 1979 in Kingston, Jamaica is a Jamaican cricketer who was captain of the West Indies cricket team and plays domestic cricket for Jamaica. He is a hard-hitting left-handed opening batsman with a wide-range of shots, and bowls useful part-time right-arm off spin. Gayle is a successful One Day International player, with over 200 appearances for the west indies and 19 centuries. He is also a successful Test batsman, averaging just over 40.00. As a prominent one day player, Gayle was chosen by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. In the 2011 IPL he was chosen by Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Dirk Nannes.

Chris Gayle Career

Gayle played for the West Indies at youth international level prior to making his first-class debut aged 19 for Jamaica. He played his first One Day International 11 months later, and his first Test match 6 months after that. Gayle, who normally opens the innings when he plays for the West Indies, is a destructive batsman who is most effective playing square of the wicket. In July 2001, Gayle (175), together with Daren Ganga (89) established the record for opening partnerships at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo when they put on 214 together against Zimbabwe.

Chris Gayle - Twenty20

Gayle holds the record for the highest innings in a Twenty20 International, having scored 117 against South Africa in the first match of the 2007 World Twenty20,[3] His innings was the first century in international Twenty20 cricket, and one of only four scored to date (the other three being Brendon McCullum's 116 not out, Suresh Raina's 101 and Mahela Jayawardene's 100). Because of this, he, Jayawardene, Suresh Raina and McCullum share the honour of being the only batsmen to score a century in each of international cricket's three formats.[4] In the semi-final match of the 2009 World Twenty20 against Sri Lanka, he became the first international player to carry his bat through the entire innings in this format of the game. In April 2008, Gayle was auctioned by the franchise Kolkata Knight Riders of the Indian Premier League, but missed the opening games due to a Sri Lanka tour to the Caribbean. When he finally joined the team, he missed out on the action due to a groin injury he picked up during that tour. Afterwards, he left to join the West Indies team for a home series against Australia, therefore not playing in the inaugural version of the IPL at all. On 1 July 2009, Gayle signed with the Western Australia Warriors for the Australian Domestic Twenty20 tournament known as the Big Bash for the 2009–10 season.

He played in the second IPL competition in early 2009, arriving for an away Test series against England very late, earning criticism about his commitment.[1] His Test series went poorly, and the West Indies went on to lose both the Test and ODI series. Gayle, however, went to on score a match winning 88 in the first official match of the 2009 Twenty20, in a surprise victory over Australia.

In 2011, after being left out of the initial part of the West Indies T20 and one-day home series against, Gayle opted to instead join the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. In his first game, against the Kolkata Knight Riders, he hit the two biggest sixes of the tournament in an amazing innings of 102 of 55, hitting 10 fours and 7 sixes.

Harbhajan Singh Biography

Full name: Harbhajan Singh
Born: 3 July 1980 (1980-07-03) Jalandhar, Punjab, India
Nickname: Bhajji, The Turbanator
Height: 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m)
Batting style: Right-hand
Bowling style: Right-arm off break
Role: Bowler

Harbhajan Singh born: 3 July 1980 in Jalandhar, Punjab, India) is an Indian cricketer. A specialist bowler, he has the second-highest number of Test wickets by an off spinner behind Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan.

Harbhajan made his Test and One Day International (ODI) debuts in early 1998. His career was initially beset by investigations into the legality of his bowling action and disciplinary incidents that raised the ire of cricket authorities. However in 2001, with leading leg spinner Anil Kumble injured, Harbhajan's career was resuscitated after Indian captain Sourav Ganguly called for his inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy team. In that series victory over Australia, Harbhajan established himself as the team's leading spinner by taking 32 wickets, becoming the first Indian bowler to take a hat trick in Test cricket.

A finger injury in mid 2003 sidelined him for much of the following year, allowing Kumble to regain his position as the first choice spinner. Harbhajan reclaimed a regular position in the team upon his return in late 2004, but often found himself watching from the sidelines in Test matches outside the Indian subcontinent with typically only one spinner, Kumble, being used. Throughout 2006 and into early 2007, Harbhajan's accumulation of wickets fell and his bowling average increased, and he was increasingly criticised for bowling defensively with less loop. Following India's first-round elimination from the 2007 Cricket World Cup, Harbhajan was replaced by other spinners in the national squad for both formats. He regained a regular position in the team in late 2007, but became the subject of more controversy. In early 2008, he was given a ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for racially vilifying Andrew Symonds. The ban was revoked upon appeal, but in April, Harbhajan was banned from the 2008 Indian Premier League and suspended from the ODI team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for slapping Sreesanth after a match.

He was conferred the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, in 2009.

Personal Life

Harbhajan was born into a middle class Punjabi family. He is the only son of Sardar Sardev Singh, a businessman who owned a ball bearing and valve factory. Growing up with five sisters, Harbhajan was in line to inherit the family business, but his father insisted that he concentrate on his cricket career and represent India.

Harbhajan was trained as a batsman by his first coach Charanjit Singh Bhullar, but converted to spin bowling after his coach's untimely death saw him turn to the tutelage of Davinder Arora. Arora credits Harbhajan's success to a work ethic that included a three hour training session in the morning, followed by an afternoon session lasting from 3 pm until after sunset.

Following the death of his father in 2000, Harbhajan became the family head, and as of 2001, had organised marriages for three of his sisters.[2] In 2002, he ruled out his own marriage until at least 2008. In 2005, he again fended off marriage rumours linking him to a Bangalore based bride, stating that he would only make a decision "after a couple of years", and that he would be seeking a Punjabi bride selected by his family.

In a country where cricketers are idolised, Harbhajan's performances have brought him government accolades and lucrative sponsorships. Following his performance against Australia in 2001, the Government of Punjab awarded him Rs. 5 lakhs, a plot of land, and an offer to become a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Punjab Police, which he accepted.

Having won 6 Doubles and 6 Mixed Doubles Tennis Grand Slam titles and finishing runners up in numerous other Grand Slam finals, he is considered to be one of the greatest and most respected contemporary doubles and mixed doubles players in the world. He is among the most successful professional Indian tennis players and is also the former captain of the Indian Davis Cup team. He is the recipient of India's highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 1996–1997, the Arjuna Award in 1990, and the Padma Shri award in 2001 for his outstanding contribution to tennis in India.

Apart from his twelve Grand Slam victories at doubles and mixed doubles events, he is famous for his several memorable Davis Cup performances playing for India and also for winning a bronze medal for India in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He also achieved the rare Men's Doubles/Mixed Doubles double during the 1999 Wimbledon. His consecutive Olympic appearances from 1992 to 2008 make him the third Indian, after shooters Karni Singh and Randhir Singh, to compete at five Olympic Games. After winning the Mixed Doubles in Wimbledon 2010, Leander Paes became only the second man (after Rod Laver) to win Wimbledon titles in three different decades. In 2010 he joined the Board of Directors of Olympic Gold Quest, a foundation co-founded by Geet Sethi and Prakash Padukone to support talented athletes from India in winning Olympic medals.

Mahesh Bhupathi Indian Tennis Player

Nickname: Hesh
Country: India
Date of birth: 7 June 1974 (1974-06-07)
Place of birth: Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Height: 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in)

Mahesh Shrinivas Bhupathi born 7 June 1974 in Chennai is an Indian professional tennis player widely regarded as among the best doubles players in the world with 11 Grand Slam titles to his credit. In 1997, he became the first Indian to win a Grand Slam tournament (with Rika Hiraki). With his win of the Australian Open Mixed Doubles in 2006, he joined the elite group of eight tennis players who have achieved a Career Mixed Doubles Grand Slam.

Mahesh Bhupathi is best known as one of the top doubles players in the '90s and the '00s. In 1999, Bhupathi won three doubles titles with Leander Paes including Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He and Leander became the first doubles team to reach finals of all four Grand Slams, the first time such a feat has been achieved in the Open era and the first time since 1952. On 26 April that year, they became the World No. 1 doubles team. Bhupathi also won the US Open mixed doubles with Ai Sugiyama of Japan.

In 2006, Bhupathi teamed with Martina Hingis in the Australian Open mixed doubles competition. Entering the tournament unseeded and as wildcards, the first-time pair defeated four seeded opponents along the way, while only dropping a single set throughout. Bhupathi and Hingis defeated the sixth-seeded team of Daniel Nestor and Elena Likhovtseva in straight sets, 6–3, 6–3 to capture the championship. It was the sixth mixed doubles Grand Slam for Bhupathi, and a first for Hingis. By winning Australian Open, Bhupathi completed a career Grand Slam in mixed doubles.

In 2007, Bhupathi and Czech Radek Šte(pánek reached the 2007 Australian Open men's doubles event's quarterfinals. He teamed with Šte(pánek at the 2007 French Open to make the doubles semifinals, defeating dual-year defending champions Jonas Björkman and Max Mirnyi in the quarterfinals. The team lost to the eventual champions Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor. After Wimbledon Bhupathi teamed along with Pavel Vízner to win the 2007 Canada Masters defeating the top-ranked doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan en route. After this victory, he won a tournament in New Haven with Nenad Zimonjic'. At the 2007 U.S. Open, he and Zimonjic' paired in doubles. After the U.S. Open, the team that beat Bhupathi and Šte(pánek in the French Open semifinals, Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor, split. Bhupathi was to become the new partner of Mark Knowles while Zimonjic' will partner Nestor, but back surgery means he is now expected to be out until the end of the year.

In 2009, Bhupathi and doubles partner Sania Mirza won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open, beating Nathalie Dechy (France) and Andy Ram (Israel) 6–3, 6–1 in the final in Melbourne. The ace Indian pair thus made up for the disappointment of last year's final when they were beaten by Tiantian Sun and Nenad Zimonjic'. With this win, Bhupathi's count in mixed doubles Grand Slam titles swells to seven.

Bhupathi broke up his partnership with Knowles and began playing once again with Max Mirnyi, whom he played with to win the 2002 U.S. Open. In 2011, Bhupathi reunited with former playing partner Leander Paes for the 2011 Australian Open. The team of Bhupathi and Paes reached the final, but lost 3–6, 4–6 to Bob and Mike Bryan.

Top 10 Individual High Scores in ODIs

India: Sachin Tendulkar High Score: Sachin Tendulkar (India): 200* vs South Africa in Gwalior on Feb 24, 2010 - Tendulkar carried his bat as he became the first batsman in the history of one-day internationals to score a double century. He faced 147 balls in his innings and hit 25 boundaries and 3 sixes as India posted an imposing 401 for 3 on the board. In reply, South Africa was all out for 248 in 42.5 overs with only AB de Villiers (114*) offering any resistance, but this match was all about Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

Zimbabwe: Charles Coventry High Score: Charles Coventry (Zimbabwe): 194* vs Bangladesh in Bulawayo on Aug 16, 2009 - Coventry was an unknown quantity in international cricket before this knock, and he has hardly done anything worth a mention since; but he wrote his name in cricket's record books with a 156 ball-194*, which contained 16 boundaries and 7 sixes. The next highest score in Zimbabwe's total of 312 for 8 was Stuart Matsikenyeri's 37. Despite Coventry's heroics, Zimbabwe lost the match thanks to Tamim Iqbal's 154 as Bangladesh won by four wickets and 13 balls to spare.

Pakistan: Saeed Anwar High Score: Saeed Anwar (Pakistan): 194 vs India in Chennai on May 21, 1997 - Anwar broke Sir Viv Richards' 13-year old record for the highest score in ODIs at the time and his 194 (146 balls, 22x4, 5x6) helped Pakistan score 327 for 5; and despite Rahul Dravid's 107, India lost the match by 35 runs.

West Indies: IVA Richards High Score: IVA Richards (West Indies): 189* vs England in Manchester on May 31, 1984 - This is easily one of the greatest ODI innings of all time. Sir Viv walked in with the score at 11 for 2 and then watched from the other end as West Indies collapsed to 166 for 9. He then decided to impose himself on the English attack and did so in style as Richards and Michael Holding (12*) put on an unbroken 106-run partnership for the last wicket. Richards hit 21 boundaries and 5 sixes in his memorable knock to help West Indies score 272 for 9 in 55 overs. His assault must have broken the England team's spirit for they hardly put up a fight and were bundled out for 168 with Richards taking 2-45 in his 11 overs.

Sri Lanka: Sanath Jayasuriya High Score: Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka): 189 vs India in Sharjah on October 29, 2000 - Jayasuriya had established himself as one of the most intimidating opening batsmen in world cricket by this time and in the Coca-Cola Champions Trophy final against India, he carted the Indian bowlers all over the stadium and sent the fielders on a leather hunt en route to a 161-ball 189 that contained 21 hits to the fence and four over it. Jayasuriya's assault meant India had to chase 300 to win the tournament, but Chaminda Vaas (5-14) and Muttiah Muralitharan (3-6) bundled the opposition out for 54 in 26.3 overs to give Sri Lanka victory by 245 runs.

South Africa: Gary Kirsten High Score: Gary Kirsten (South Africa): 188* vs UAE in Rawalpindi on Feb 16, 1996 - This World Cup clash was always going to be a mismatch and Kirsten treated the UAE bowling attack with utter disdain as he carried his bat to remain 188 not out (159 balls, 13x4, 4x6) as South Africa amassed 321 for 2 and went on to thrash the minnows by 169 runs.

India: Sachin Tendulkar High Score: Sachin Tendulkar (India): 186* vs New Zealand in Hyderabad on Nov 8, 1999 - This match is mainly remembered for Tendulkar's unbeaten 186 (150 balls, 20x4, 3x6); but it is often forgotten that he shared a 331-run partnership with Rahul Dravid, who made 153 in as many deliveries. Tendulkar and Dravid's partnership saw India post an imposing 376 for 2 on the board. New Zealand was never in the run chase as they lost wickets at regular intervals before being bowled out for 202 in 33.1 overs.

Australia: Shane Watson High Score: Shane Watson (Australia): 185* vs Bangladesh in Dhaka on April 11, 2011 - In a savage attack on the Bangladesh bowling attack, Watson hit 15 boundaries and 15 sixes (a record in ODIs) in his 185* off only 96 deliveries. Watson's knock was also the highest by an Australian in ODIs. He completed his sixth one-day hundred off just 69 balls, the third-fastest by an Australian after Matthew Hayden (66 balls) and Adam Gilchrist (67 balls).

India: MS Dhoni High Score: MS Dhoni (India): 183* vs Sri Lanka in Jaipur on Oct 31, 2005 - Kumar Sangakkara's 138* and his 151-run partnership for the third wicket with Mahela Jayawardene (71) saw Sri Lanka post a total of 298 for 4. Sri Lanka may have thought they had done enough to win the match, but a young upstart by the name of MS Dhoni had other ideas as he led India's run-chase with a fabulous 183* off 145 balls (15x4, 10x6) as the hosts overhauled the score with six wickets to spare in 46.1 overs.

India: Sourav Ganguly High Score: Sourav Ganguly (India): 183 vs Sri Lanka in Taunton on May 26, 1999 - Another match in which Rahul Dravid made a century, but his innings was overshadowed by a magnificent ton from somebody else. That somebody else, in this match, happened to be Ganguly who scored 183 in 158 balls with 17 boundaries and 7 sixes. Ganguly and Dravid (145) added 318 runs for the second wicket as India amassed 373 for 6. Robin Singh's 5-31 saw Sri Lanka bowled out for 216 as India won this World Cup Group A match by 157 runs.
